MASTERTON LICENSING COMMITTEE.
QUARTERLY MEETING.
The quarterly meeting of the Masterton District Licensing Committee was held yesterday at noon. Present -Messrs T. Hutchison, S.M., (chairman), A. Stewart, C. E, Daniel], Burnt Syverston, A. Walker, T. E, Chnmboiiain, J, Dawson and P. Bright. A TRANSFER. M. Kelliher applied for a a permanent transfer of the Olub Hotel, Ekctahuna, from P. Pelling. Miv Pownall appeared for applicant. In reply to the Committee, Mr Kelliher stated that the delay in getting the temporary trausfei occurred through ignorance of the law.
Mr Pownall said ho did not think there was any breach of the law. Immediately Pelling left the house the application for the transfer was bigncd and lodged with the Clerk. Tho delay was chiefly caused by the absence of himself, and was not the fault of the applicant. Mr Walker said it was a bad precedent, and should be guarded against, The police should have taken action at once,
The tl'iinsfcr was granted. EXTENSION'. R, Seymour (Club Hotel), and E. Sullivan (Commercial Hotel) Palilalia, applied for an extension of hours till 11 o'clock,
Mr Tosswill said he appeared for all the hotel-keepers in Pahiatun, and made an application for an extension for all the houses in that town
The Chairman said that one hotolkeeper had stated that on a former occasion an application for extension was made without his authority, and he did not want the extension. The Committee declined to deal with other than those applications properly before them. Mr Tosswill advanced reasons for the extension.
Sergeant McArdle said he would oppose any application for extension and asserted that where tho extension had been given it had not proved beneficial to the community, T. Cotter, licensee of the Post Office Hotel, Pahiatua, gave evidence in support of his application for extension. During tho time he held an eleven o'clock license it was found much more convenient, both for the public and hotelkeepers. By Sergeant McArdle: Settlers came into the town from long distances to entertainments, and people coming by the late train to Eketahuna could not reach Pahiatua before eleven o'clock, The decision was deferred, IX BAXKRUI'TCY. Mr W. B. Chennells, Deputy Official Assignee, stated that Mr W. Tucker, licensee of the Makuri Hotel, had filed his schedule, and made application for a temporary, transfer to his appointee, Jeremiah Cotter, who was now in possession on account of the mortgage. The application was referred to two members of the Committee,

Application for extension of a permit, so as to give time to effect a sale of the licensee's interest,
Mr Pownall, in making the application, stated that every effort was being made to effect a sale or lease of the property, and they were now in treaty with one gentleman from Wellington and several others, The licensee appeared indifferent because the loss did not fall on bis head, The property had been settled on the wife and children. Mrs Burling was doing her utmost to conduct the house for the licensee, and was anxious to find a purchaser, so as not to allow the license to lapse.—Decision reserved. UNIVERSAL HOTEL, EKETAUUXA.
The police report slated that the necessary improvements had notbeen carried out.
Sergeant McArdle staled that since the report was written the arrangements had been completed for carrying out the improvements ordered, and he would withdraw the report. At this stage the meeting adjourned until 2.15 p.m. DECISIONS. After the adjournment decisions were given as follows:—The Pahiatua applications for extension of hours were refused on the casting vote of the Chairman.
With respect to W, J. Burling's application the Committee adjourned until Wednesday, October 2nd, at 2 p.m., when the licensee willbecalled upon to show cause why his licenso should not bo cancelled, under section 135 of the Licensing Act.
