Friday. Mr "Giry" Stewart, the only surviving 6on of the well-known Stewart family, who resided here for many years, died at a Native friend's residence in Great FrederickBtreet,shortly after noon on Wednesday, A few weeks ago he was about town as usual, and was apparently enjoying the best of health. A perfect gale blew here all day Wednesday and Thursday night, doing no little damage in various directions, Several trees were uprooted, and a few bricks and a chimney pot fell from Dr. Spratta' residence. Mr Harry Tully has entered on his new duties as Town Clerk, etc.; Jlisa Stone has likewise commenced Jar duties as librarian. hear there are quite a number of burgesses to, be nominated for the four vacant seats in the Borough
Council. The Maoris are sending a petition to the Government bearing 300 signatures, praying that a European doctor be stationed among them, Many_ years ago the Government promised the Natives a doctor—but they have not seen him yet. They intend to meet Mr Hutchison, S.M., and discuss the matter with him. Two young men were arrested here yesterday, on suspicion of having goods illegally in their possession. They wore brought before Mr C, W. Hornblow, last night, and remanded. The Band of Hope social takes place to-night in the Palace Hall.
