He confirms tho religious character ot the Society. Shanghai, August 8. Yesterday a mob attacked the BritishAmerican Mission Houses in Fathan, near Canton, and the hospital was demolished.
A Chinese gun-boat has been ordered to proceed there.
The Vegetarians number 12,000, and are all well armed. They stale they intend to destroy the whole of the Missions in the Quong Long province, and eject the missionaries. It is stated that outbreaks against Christians have taken place iu Chingchow, Hunch, Taiping, and Antitir. Two hundred Sikah troups, stationed in Hong Kong, escort Mansfield to Kucheng.
The attack was organised by the olliuials.
At the public meeting resolutions were carried complaining of the inadequate means taken by the British Government to protect their subjects in the East, and demanding that pressure be brought to bear on the Chinese Government to stop the outrages. The American Consul iu Foochoo reports that he has, obtained the names of the leaders of the massacre.
