Shooting seems to have commenced in earnest around this district judging by the shots heard. Kooti te Rata (the Wesleyan Maori Missionary) died hero last Saturday afternoon. He has been suffering from asthma for a very long time past. He was highly respected by both European and Native, and was a thorough consistent Christian man. A tayi is being held. The late missionary camo from the South Island somo years ago,and has resided here since.
Mr It. Thompson, who met with a trap accident, a week or so ago, is progressing favorably towards recovery, The funeral of the late Mr John Hawko, was largely attemlod last Friday. Tho funeral servico was conducted by tho Bovs, W. Rowso and S. J. Gibson. Tho deceased was a member of the Court of Foresters, and tho service in connection with the Order was read by Bro. A. L. Webster.
Sam. Beore, eldest son of Mr John Beore, was taken to the Hospital yeeterday, suffering from a very severe illness.
Great preparations have been made for the Hospital Ball which takes place here this week.
