MAKURI.
RABBITS IN THIS PUKETOI,
From our own Correspondent,
Rabbits! Rabbits! Rabbits! Already, this is oni' cry at Maknri, and in the Pukctoi, Wo have rabbits, there is no use trying to hide tho fact, although we feci ashamed to own it, and shun the subject just as we would the plague, Now rabbits alone could be coped with, without a great deal of cost or bother; but we have Rabbit Inspectors as well as rabbits, and so long as the present staff of those officials are in charge of this District, rabbits will increase tenfold, as they have already dono during the past six months. Ono day last week, I saw sixteen rabbits which had been caught in a few hours, on one property, over which the Inspectors have been repeatedly, probably with their eyes shut, or they probably have defective eyesight. On another property, I heard of eight being caught in a few hours, with one man and two or three dogs. Both the owners of these properties, no doubt, think the Inspectors "Jolly nice fellows, open-hearted, don't wish to press a man, you know," kind of men, - nevor stopping to think that they are utterly ruining the District, and that in a few j ears' time their own properties will not bo worth half their present value. Something should bo done at once, or I am quito certain that where sixteen are caught now, in a year's time there will be sixty, and 1 am also sure, that with very little trouble, these pests could be quite cleaned out of the District; but what would the Inspectors do then, poor things!
