GREYTOWN NEWS.

From Our Own Correspondent. Friday. I understand that about £2o worth of damage was done to the Waiohino protective works during the late floods. A person in this town complains of petty thieying of fruit that is carried on by someone. He informs me that he sent a case of apples away by train a few weeks ago, aud before tho box reached its destination half tho apples had been stolen. This is not the first time that such a thing has happened, and the sooner the railway authorities enquire into the matter and make an example of the thief the bettor. Why should a box of fruit be tampered with any more than a sealed letter ? Tho monster concert to bo held here next Wednesday evening, to raise sufficient funds to wipe off the long-standing debt on the Fire Erigado Engine, will undoubtedly be the most successful and grandest concert ever held in the Wairarapa. It is said that nothing succeeds like success, and this will bo fully exemplified next Wednesday evening, when the Palace Hall will be packed with nn audience as close as sardines in a box. A torchlight procession, headed by the baud, will precede the concert. I believe all the folk in Greytown and surrounding district, intend to turn out en masse, and so clear the debt oft the engine. The best talent lias been secured by the Secretary. I hear that Mr Chas. Jury lost a large number of sheep through the lato flood, and that Mr Thos Walker, of Kahautava, last a large number of cattle. ' A butcher's cart is to run round Greytownand district shortly, selling mutton at one penny per lb. Tho owner is confident that he can realise at the rate of its per sheep by selling in this way. Two native weddings are to bo celebrated on the Ist of May. Ono of the contracting parties is a European, who will take unto himself a pretty native I damsel.
