(From Our Own Correspondent.) Monday.
On Saturday afternoon a meeting of the River Board was held. Present—Messrs Matthews (chairman), J. 0. Bidwill, P. Pearce, H. Hume, and W. 0. Williams. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £5619s Id, It was reported that the Natives had asked for permission to fish at tho moutli of the Lake while it was closed, and that permission had been granted on the understanding that should a flood come and the Lake require opening they would revive one day's notice of the intenjA to open the Lake. The Chairman reported that as the water had got to a height that it was damaging property, and consequent on the rain of the previous few days he had sent a man and horses to start scooping from the coast side. It was resolved to give the natives notice, and to go on with tho opening on Tuesday. This was all the businoss, so the meeting terminated, A meeting of stewards of the W. 11,0, was hold at the Tauhorcnikau Hotel on Saturday last. Present : W. E. Bidwill (chairman), C, R, Bidwill, W. J. Nix, J. S. Cuudy, W. 0. Williams, G. Reynolds, Fred Pearce, A, Morrison, R. Bright and A. M, Wilkinson. The tender of Mr A. Jones for tho luncheon booth was accepted. Continuing the investigation into the Moroa Course affair, Cooper was called on, and Mr Fabian's letter read to him, and he still maintained that Fabian bad given him permission to break his lock, It was unanimously roped that a meeting of stewards snould be held at Greytown on Wednesday, 27th inst., when all concerned in the matter shall be present, so that tho business may be gone into thoroughly before a decision is given. The matter of seoiug to the concrete culvert was left in the hands of tho Chairman, and the mattor of arranging about a Hag post for a flag to warn people across tho course when horses have started was loft in the hands of the Secretary. This being all the business the meetiugadjournedtothocoursewuere two starting machines were on exhibition, the first Messrs Bright and Morrison's which has two arms and tapes across which go right np, seemed to give great satisfaction, tho second was thatofMr Lewis, of Grey* town,patent.This was simplicity itself simply being two silk elastic tapes stretched across from two posts, both tapes going back to the other side at once, but it is feared that with a strong breeze, the elastic tapes might get round a horse's leg, as the tapes go in front oMhe horses. There were good starts JRde with both, there being nearly a dozen horses on the track. Messrs Bright and Morrison gave 10s prize to the first horse covering 50 yards. This was won by Mr W. A. Donald's Voltaire. Not to be bested, Mr Lewis gave three prizes, to tho first, second, and third horses, started by his machine, the first prize boing won by Voltaire, and tho second by Mr W. A, Donald, on Jumbo.
