GREYTOWN NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Friday. The town wns enveloped in smoke yesterday, caused by bush fires in the vicinity of Papawai, Kuratiwhiti, WoodsideaudMatarawa. One person at Papawai lost ten cords of firewood. A high wind was blowing during the day which caused tho fires to rapidly spread. A little son of Mr R. Tilson, of Papawai, broke his leg this week, through falling from a house he was climbing. The Fire Brigade's Sports next Monday promise to equal any of the Sport l ; held down this way. The Brigade are doing their best to make the affair a success and I understand the Carterton and Masterton Brigades have signified their willingness to do all in their power to assist and should the weather prove favorable there will doubtless bo a large gathering present, Mr J. Lewis has patented a starting machine, which will be exhibited and worked on the ground during the day of the Sports. It is a simple but very ingenious contrivance. Another machine patented by two other residents, will also be exhibited. Several of our brigadesmen went over to Matarawa last night and assisted the settlers in that district to cope with the fiery elements. Saturday. Mr R, Welch sent a cheque for £5 to the Captain of the Fire Brigade together with a letter expressing his thanks for their assistance at the fire at Matarawa.
