CARTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Mr Sexton reports that a straw stack of his was set fire to on Monday night and was destroyed, with a quantity of fences, The police constables are enquiring into the matter. Preliminary steps were taken fi Worm a Foresters' Court for won* in Carterton. A meeting was hernlast night, and 18 names givon in ' of proposed members. The final competition for the bronze medal which entitles the winnor to represent the Carterton Rifle Club at the Jrentham meeting, next weok, will be finally competed foroa Thursday. The leading aggregates for two out of the three competitions '. that have been hold are Rossiter /• 119, A. Reynolds 116, Bairstow, Fairbrother, and T. Keid 112 each, E. Rutherfui'd 109, Dudson 109. Mr J. Hopwood, whose contract at £lO3 las was accepted for the erection of a Board's School at Taratahi West, is making good progress with, tho work. When opened the schoolwill prove a boon to the children o£ tho settlers scattered around the district, who at present have to travel four or fivo miles to the Clareville School,
Tho Road Board is about to fill in the few chains of opeu ditch on Jb- : main road, near the Clarevillo course, and carry the water direct across tho road and through the oppositesection. That is the natural course- ; but many years ago a settler started this ditch with the idea of carrying; the water alongside the road, right through Carterton. After cutting a few chains he stopped and the water was carried across the road, nothing more being done to continue the Engineer's fad. Many a conveyance \U come to grief at tin's point, and tho wonder is the Board has not filled ui the ditch years ago,
