The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on the last quarterly banking averages, says they show that tho tendency in New Zealand as woll as in tho other colonies, is in tho direction of smaller dependence on deposits, and larger use of proprietary funds. Tho inovemont is in a desirable
direction, but the accumulation of reserves, howevor, must tond to the reduction of the rate of profits. This world-wide feature of banking is present, and must continue till enterprise revives.
