Tim competency of tho Borough Council to manage the gas works is now being tested. It retained iu its employ for a considerable period a manager whom everybody knew to bo unsatisfactory and unprofitable, mid even when it was forced to dispense with Iris servicesi some Councillors were weak enough to endeavour to continue tkein. A new man has recently been appointed. Ho found' the works in a deplorable condition, and ho has, we are informed, worked very hard to improve them. There is reason to consider that as far as the works are concerned, he is a good man, and if this be the case, the Borough Council ought not to lose his services. It will discredit that body, if it establishes a'reputation for being unable to keop a good man in charge of its works. That the present manager in a moment of irritation, wrote an objectionable letter which has led up to his resignation, is quite apparent. But with a little tact we do-not sep why both letter and resignation should not be withdrawn, It is ( easier to lose a good man than to get
one, and no private employer of labour would let a good manager go, bccauso in a moment of irritation ho happened to be' somewhat too outspoken and independent.
