A southern firm wrote offering to supply a thoroughly good secondhand weighing machine, weighing up to ten tons for £IOO, On the motion of Cr Hornblow it was resolved that tho Council cannot see its way to entertain the oSer at present. Cr Hornblow drew attention to the unsafe state of certainlire ladders. He thought that the matter should receive attention,

Tho Clerk explained that at a previous meeting it had resolved that the Fire Brigade Committee procure two new ladders, . The matter was referred to the Firo Brigade Committee. KBISASCES. In reply to Or Yates the Mayor said action was being taken with regard to hedges overhanging the footpath. WATER.

Cr Hornblow moved that the offer of a water supply submitted to the Council by Mr Kcnall on October 25th, 1893, for lire extinguishing and sanitary purposes bo taken into consideration by the Council, In- bringing the matter up he did so at tho request of tho principal business people in Queen Street. Many saw that there was little probability of I getting a water loan carried, and an opinion was expressed that Mr ItenalPs supply would be of great use for h're extinguishing purposes. It had been stated that in bringing up this matter, ho was merely working an electioneering dodge, but the Council would give him credit for bringing forward any matter of public interest which might be brought under his notice. The health of the Borough was an important matter, and for that alone, they should secure Mr Benall's water to flush out the Town Creek. The Borough was not prepared to go to a large expense for water, but he did not think the ratepayers would object to spending a little on Mr Benall's water supply, if only to clear the Creek. He would like to see a Committee consisting of Crs Mutrie, Hughes, and' the mover set up to interview Mr Itenall on the subject.

. Cr Wagg seconded pro forma. Cr Mutric said he should like to .see water running through the town on certain conditions, but the matter had been thoroughly threshed out many times before, and the main objection was that no water could bo obtained when it was wanted most.

Tho Mayor pointed out that the water would not run down the new channels in Queen Street,

Cr Yates said if they took Mr Eeuall's water it would have to run down Perry Street, Cr Chamberlain said Mr Hcnall's water would bo all very well, but how were they going to confine it to a water-coarse.

Cr Feist asked that the letter from Mr Eenall alluded to by Cr Hornblow, and the Council's resolution be read,

Tho Clerk read the letter and stated that no action had been taken.

Cr Hughes moved, as an amendment, that the question of any water supply be deferred until after the coming Mayoral election.

Tho amendment was put and carried, only Cr Hornblow voting against it.

Other matters, reported elsewhere, were dealt with, and on the motion of Cr Feist, tho Council then adjourned,
