Anml dinner.
A most successful finale to the football season of the Red Star Football Club was held in the Princo. of Wales Hotel last evening, where between fifty and sixty members assembled together to spend a social evening. At seven o'clock, the company sat down toanexcellentdinner, provided by Host Tucker, and the repast afforded the footballers ample opportunity to show their ability off the field. The table was prettily laid out with the colors of the Club, and red and black ribbons wo conspicuous in all'portions of the room. After niostof the good things had vanished from the tables, an adjournment was iiia'do fpr hi}lf lin hour, and fin i:e : turning, all arrangqments were cpiriflletp for tile resf $ tile ey'ening,' '' flr Buternent occupied the chair and was supported by five captains, Messrs D'Arcy (Masterton), Pratt (Te Ore Ore), Bennett (Orientals), Wilsone (Stars), Jeffries (Junior Stars). There were also present nnmorous members of other Clubs. A splendid concert programme was rendered consisting of songs by the following gentlemen, Messrs Thompson, Braggins, Hansen, Jeffries, Dougall, Sutherland, Sutton, Greathead, flinders' find others. Mr Sutherland pjdye'd all the 'accompaniments 'in fine style. , ! '' Ourhiff'the evening presentations of medals were made by the Cliairmp, wlip inside yevy appropriate remarks, and eulogised the' p)ay qf the several recipients, The medal for tho best'back in the Star Club, and nleo one for the finest play in the Wairarapa-New South Wales match were awarded to Mr Geo. Hansen; for the best forward in the first fifteen, to Mr J. Cochrane; for the best back in the second, to Mr W. Thompson j 'and foi; the,best forward, to Mr T, Stone. Each member briefly returned thauks. Tho most interesting portion of
the evening's amusement was the presentation by the members of the Club of a valuable liquor stand, oncasod in an onkon cabinet, and ongraved and mounted in solid silver, to Mr W, C. Cargill, who has lately entered the matrimonial state. Dr Butemont made the presentation tind spoko highly of Mr Cargill's work for his Club both on and off the football field. Messrs Wilsono and D'Arcy endorsed the remarks, and Mr Cargill suitably responded. Tlio usual toasts were proposed and respoudedto during the evening an(l a most sociable gathorihg finished up about midnight. The Committee of Management, Messrs Wilsone, Jeffries, and the oncotic Secretary of tlio Club, Mr F. Butoment, deserve every credit for the success of the affair, and their efforts will go a long way to kioping up the popularity of the Club.
