Proposed Market Gardening Company.
A large and representative meeting of the gardeners of Mnslcrton was held on Saturday evening last, for the purpose of discussing the proposals to establish a Co-operative Market Gardening Company in this district. Mr Pnpworth explained to the meeting the proposals which had been made for the formation of such a Company, and dwelt upon the importance of adhering strictly to business liucs, as auy other way of attempting the project must end in vexation and failure. Iu addition the success of the company would be a most ell'ectual solution of the " Aliens Invasion " question, a question which at this time was troubling the whole of the .English speaking world. He thought that the most important questions for the meeting to discuss were whether the necessary scope for such a project existed in this district and whether it would pay interest on the capital required to establish it. Alter a lengthy discussion, during which statistics and estimates were submitted, it was unanimously resolved " That there is an undoubted scope in this district for the operations of the proposed company, and that this meeting is of lite opinion that, with good management, the business must pay considerably more than interest on the cnpital'neccssury for its establishing." Mr Hale said that the Company would most likely cucounler a strong opposition from the alien gardeners for the first year, but the superior article that the Company could produce at the same price which the alien is now charging forhis inferiorproductjWluehisbeing grown inhot, disease-producing innuurcs, would soon leave the field clear for the operations of the company. Mr P. Murray, Mr Colloltc, Mr F' Parker, Mr Gilpin and Mr Stone were of the opinion that if the public really understood the difference of the mode of growth of vegetables between the European and the Chinese in this district, they would not now buy from the alien to the extent they did, but that they would make an effort and grow for their own consumption. . , A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Papworth for the time and trouble he had taken iu the matter as they considered no more strictly business method could be adopted which would better conserve the interest of (lie trade of Mastcrton,
