The D.T.C. in Wellington lias conceived the novel idea of lining up iu miniature a completely furnished liveroomed cottage, and this ingenious departure iu shop dressinghns attracted considerable attention in the Empire City For the comparatively small sum of ,C 59 IDs the B.f.C, underlalics lo furnish completely, no article, however small, being forgotten, a five-roomed house. All the articles are of remarkably good quality, and the wonder is how it can be done at the price. The D.J.C. is very gay just now, 100, villi all the Spring and Summer goods in the I drapery and millinery departments, whilst full and varied slocks of the newest goods are to be seen iu the other branches. Wellington has long been noted for the excellence of its photographers, and in a town where there arc so many firstrale artists, it is a dillicult as it would be invidious to draw comparisons. Mrs Herrmann's ali'lkr in Cuba Street has the reputation of turning out some of the best photographs in town, and wc arc 1 sure lliat this is more than probable, for wc have seen some really beautiful pictures issued from the establishment. The wonder is how such (-harming pictures, so elaborately and artistically finished, can be produced at such low charges. For a really enjoyable halfhour, visitors could not do better than to inspect the photographs which arc most tastefully displayed. The public trial of Wriglcy's patent Stump Extractor, held on Saturday afternoon, proved the machine to be a thoroughly useful one, and that it will meet with favour from those intending to clear their land, (here can be no doubt. The stumper is made wilb mi upright frame through which is placed a heavy screw with claw at foot, every turn of the screw making a certain lift. A slay keeps the machine upright,!! device needed with all standard machines, otherwise they are hound lo lilt over as the strain comes on, more especially iu soft ground. Working on the screw (and above a loose collar running on rollers) is a heavy screwed casting with three rings through which the lever is placed, and with a twelve foot lever, one or two men can—with comparative case—raise a heavy stump, After ground is broken, a crow-bar is sullicicnt to do the work. If necessary a horsegear can bo attached to the lever, mid with larger-machines the heaviest slump can be operated oiu To be fully appreciated these machines must be seen at work, but many will thoroughly understand this particular patent, if wc say that it is after the style of the screw press, only lifting instead of pressing downwards.
