North Wanarapa Liberal Association.
The usual weekly meeting of .the North Wairarapa Liberal Association was held last evening, The Employers' Private Benefit Society Bill, tho Elective Executive Bill, and the Dairy Industry Bill were read, but no resolution was come to on any of them. Tho petition which has been presented to Parliament, having for its object the reduction of tho size of the Borough of Mastcrton, was discussed at some length, As tho Borough Council had taken no sttps to lay the question before the ratepayers, the Association considered they were justified in forwarding to tho member for the District, the result of its deliberations, It was resolved that the Secretary write to the member for the District informing him "That the question of the reduction of tho size of the Borough had been discussed by tho Association, and they were of tho opinion that the prayer of the petitioners should not be granted." Among tho reasons stated were
" That it would dissolvo the Council thereby putting tho Borough to the cost of another election." " That
it would bo to the disadvantage of the Borough to cut off tho properties as proposed by the new boundaries, thereby banding over to the Road Board the rates whilo the Council would have to pay the cost of keeping the streets in repair." " That it would bo grossly unfair that properties one side of a street should bo cut off and pay rates to a Eoad Board, when othors-whilo facing » street of tho Borough —would participate in all improvements effected in the Borough." "That the reduction of the rateable area would necessitate a higher rate being struck for the ordinary purposes of maintenance, etc," "That very little advantage would bo gained—if any—ineuabling the carrying of any proposal for raising any special loan. Tho Municipal Corporations Act having already made some provision for the defining of a special area over which a special rate could bo struck for purposes of improvement, in which othor portions of the Borough outside that special area would not be benefitted,"
