EARTHQUAKES.
Severely Mt in -Wellington. (By Telegraph.—Press Association)
Wellington, Monday. There was a small shock of earthquake about 4.30 this morning, accompanied by a sound like a sharp explosion. At 9.40, however, there was another shock the most prolonged and vigorous felt hero for soveral years, It fetched people running out of their houses into the streets in nil directions. Latei. No Damage Done,
So far as can be gathered, people vere quits .for their fright, and no actual damage was done. Thero was more noise than anything else. Porsons in the open say there was a loud crash as though the hills were coming clown bodily, and the ndise of buildings rattling together and the rustling of treos was tremendous. In some of the taller wooden building the swaying was violent and women fainted, The brick buildings do not appear to have felt it so much.
Sir James Hector says the seismometer at the Museum showed a vibration of fin., and the shock, which lasted six seconds, was the most vigorous in his experience. The direction was from the north west, and he thinks it is very likely to be connected with some disturbance in the central region, Tho shock in the early morning was preceded by a loud concussion which led many to believe there had been an explosion somewhere in town,
The Public Library got a bad wrench from the earthquake this moriiiug. The old crack caused over a year ago iu a similar manner was opened out again and extended a little. Plaster fell largely from the roof in the hall and was cracked on the walls,
