A PRETTY CONCEIT.
The enormous sales ot the Waterbury have led firms who do not care for a steady turnover at a legitimate profit to explore the purlieus of the Continentfor cheap, inferior 11 tickers "—-je do not call them watches—with which to 'run the Watcrbury.' These possess ono virtueouly—that of showing the dealer a return of some 150 per cent, on his outlay. That they should keep time is a matter ol no moment, so long as they resemble the Watcrbury in outward appearance, style of casing, etc., with sufiioient closeness to deceive a careless or unwary purchaser. Firms doing this often say to us" What do wo care; wo can make five shillings a watch, more on them then wo can on yours; and as to kcepiug time, well, our troubles about that." Uuyers requiring reliable watchci can trust the Watcrbury, aud the public requiring tho correct lime should see that they get it. Tho gonts'or ladies' Watcrbury, gold filled or in sterling silver, are handsome, inexpensive, anil durable; whilst the nickel varieties aro so well known that thoy "require no furthe recommendation. It is a pretty conceit for here and thero a stray trader to think his imports of tho " Nebuchadnezzar," the " llillcn.um." the " Gonbung," or somo other specially titled monstrosity, has any effect on the Waterbury rnarkot, whilst for every watch he nervously orders over ono hundred Waterburys are always afloat for New Zealand. Tho teal strength of the Watcrbury lies in its absolute reliability, in other words its absolute refusal to keep anything but tho correct time Wo sometimes see" tickers"—we still bar them any other title-offered for 6alo which aro really wonderful combinations, They not only exhibit tho whoio of the celestial bodies on their facts, but keep time, or profess to,toli | you the state of tho money market, the amount of any partioulal member's indeb tcdncss at Bellamy's, and the namo of the next Bank to reconstruct in Australia. Tho Watcrbury does not do this,'lt simply ccps correct time and goes on doing so,
