The weather broke again here on Friday night, and after having three fine days tho roads, which were beginning to dry, are again in tho usual state,

Mr Bates, of the Empire Hotel, has transferred hi 3 lease to Mrs Beck, from the West Coast, who took possession a couple of days ago, Mr Bates intends to remain sometime in Pahiatna,

Many of the settlers here are complaining about the action of the officials in the Land Office, in keeping their deposits which wero sent down with applications for forfeited sections six weeks ago, they having actually to apply to Wellington before the money was returned to them. The school children are getting their midwinter holidays. A very successful concert was held held on Tuesday last in aid of the funds for the Presbyterian Church organ, The hall was filled, After the concert was over a very enjoyable dance was held, to which about 25 couples remained, The new hotel at Makakahi will open in a day or so, for which a license was recently granted. Mr Milne, late oi Napier, is the proprietor. Mr D. Puckle, who has been appointed ranger under the Game Licensing Act, is already on the alert for poaehers. Two batches of unemployed have arrived here, I believe thoy are to bo put on tho railway works, It is reported that plans for the new Court House and Post Office are now being propared. The previous design has been abandoned; McKay's flection has been tixod upon for the site.
