SOCIAL GATHERING AT BIDEFORD.

One of those sooial evenings which ever leaves pleasant ■ behind, took place in the J Eohoolhouse on the evemngflgihv,,J 28ih, when a farewell soHWBy ' dance was tendered by the imd&m to Miss Bannister, on the eve of hff. departure from this district, where she has reßided for the past five years in charge of the Bideford school. The muddy roads and wet. weather was rather disappointing, but despite this there was a fair muster from all parts of the neighbourhood .around, Immediately after tea was dispensed wilb, a presentation, was mado to Miss bannister, the gift taking the form of a neat silver ladies watch and chain, as a small mark of recognition for the extreme kindness she has always displayed towards the children during the lime she has had charge oi the Bideford school, Mr J, W, Lang made.the presentation, which wasaeoompanied with a few well chosen and appropriate remarks, followed by three hearty cheers for every snocess in her future oareer. Great praise is due to those ladies who so kindly freshments in abundance, MesdamQQßi Carswell, Wilton, Cameron, and Miss Lang undertaking these duties, And oarrying out everything else oonneoted with the affair, with the utmost efficiency from beginning to end. After the presentation had been, made, the remainder of the evening was devoted to dancing, songs, and-recitations, one of the chief features being the much-admired and olever step-danc-ing of Messrs Lang Bros, who have only recently taken up their abode in ■ this locality. The Scotch step dances and songs of these "twabrawScotoh '. laddies" weremuoh appreciated, and quite charmed one and all, keeping tho whole gathering alive with merriment, Theso two gentlemen aro altogether a decided acquisition to the district, The music supplied for the occasion was aocordeon and,bagpipes, played by Messrs H. Lang and <T. Scott, The Scotob part of the com * munity were quite in their element, with their National musio. The pro. ceedings dip not terminate till almost daylight, all expressing the opinion that the affair had been one of tho most enjoyable of" long nights" ever spent in tho Bideford school house, and from beginning toenda thorough success.
