FOOTBALL.
[BY DAMOCLES,J Tho football season opened in Mastertonon Saturday, whon, considering the threatening state of the weather, there was a largo muster of footballers on the Park Oval, members of both the Masterton and Star Clubs being prosent, and a very successful praotico was the result, A few of the players showed very good form for tho first praotico, but the majority will need a tremendous lot of hard training to got them in football trim, A meeting of the Rod Star Club was held on Saturday night at the Empire Hotel, when thero was a very large attendance of inembp'y, nu ut good deal of um'uu unsiocss was transacted. Several matches werearranged, one to tako pluco with the Melroso at an early dale, and a junior mnteh with the Pirates at Easter. It was decided that the colours of the Club should bo black, and it has been arranged for a supply oi jerseys and caps, It was resolved that the Club hold its matches on Saturdays. The half-holiday on Thursday will be of great disadvantage to footballers generally in Masterton, as some aro unable to play on Thursday, and some likewise on Saturday, and in consequence there will be great troublo in getting decent teams in the field.
Tho Greytown Club held a most successful practice on Saturday, the players mustering in full force. I notico they havo the threo Carterton veterans in their ranks, Booth, McKenzie and Eagle, who aro already in great form,
"On tho Ball" in tho Examiner writes;-"Wo hear things are not as they should be in connection with the Bush Rugby Union, After the conclusion of last season's matches the Secretary left Pahiatua, where he was residing, leaving the Union's affairs in a very "cronk" condition. Several delegate meetings were held, and a secretary and treasurer were appointed, Demand after demand havo been made on tho Secretary, who is residing at Danevirke, to produce the books cad finances of the Union, hut all without avail. When wo say that there is something liko £2O involved, it can he understood that tho aunual meeting of the Bush Rugby Union will be a lively aflair. The matter has been kept very quiet, but as something like six months has elapsed since the delegates to the Union had the matter brought before them, tho footballers in tho Bush districtare entitled to know about it, Tho present position is that, unless a settlement is made by the Secretary tho Union will have to collapse,"
A meeting was held in Anderson's Hall, Eketaliuna, on Saturday night last, the object being the formation of a 3unior Football Club. Mr Hodgos, who was in the chair, briefly explained ,tho object of tho mooting; and Mr Hart, Secretary of the Senior Club, who acted as Secretary pro /cm, explained to the boys tho usual formalities. Fifteen namos were hnndod in. Master William Polling was elected Secretary, and it was resolved that he write to the Pabiatua Junior#, and arrange for a match on Good Friday; the match to come off prior to the match between the Eketaliuna and Pabiatua Senior Clubs.
