Thomas Sentenced to five Years. Ik Judqe's Comments. [By Telegraph.—Press Association,] Wellington, Wednesday. The young man, Albert Thomas, who pleaded guilty to tho charge of attempted murder of J. L. Kirkbride, of the Evening Press, has been sen< fenced to five years' penal servitude, The Chief Justice, in passing sentence, Said tho case was a difficult one to deal with, and he was not sure ho was taking a right view of it, Ho bad come to the conclusion that the prisoner was a person who was accountable (or hie actions, and as the sama offence might bo repeated, society must be protected, and he could not treat him as an imbecile, Tho Crown would watch the case while the prisoner was under control, and if he showed signs of mental weakness, he would be treated accordingly, Under ordinary circumstances the sentence would be a very inadequate one, but when ho took all the surroundings into consideration, he thought the punishment ho meted out would bo sufficient.
