TOLL BETWEEN EKTAHUNA AND PAHIATUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). -** A meeting was held in Elliston's Hall on Friday night, to consider the advisability of erecting a toll-gato on the Ekctuhuna-Pahiatua Road. Mr Parsons was voted to the chair. Mr von Redin, the convenor of the meeting, explained bis reason for calling tbo meeting at some length, and said it was either for the ratepayers to erect the gate, or allow the road to goto ruin. Mr Syvevsen moved that there should bo no toll-gate. This was. seconded by Mr Aulin. Mr Stewart moved as an amendment, that as thero appeared no other way of keeping the road in repair than by putting up ut gate, he thought that a toll would ba preferable to having a bad road. Mr Lund seoonded. Considerable discussion took place about the amendment. Mr Von Hedin pointed out that the - County Counoil had no power to increase the rate: The road was being used mostly by coaches and tiin"%l ber waggons, whiohescaped contributing to the maintenance of the road altogether under the present systorn, Mr Aulin considered a toll gato was simply a rolio of barbarism. He . thought it would divert tho Woodville and Fahiatua traffic through the Gorge line and to Napier. Upon tho amendment being put to the meeting, it was oarried by a majority. It was suggested that the gate bo erected as near the boundary as possible. A vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman, and the meeting terminated.
