Wellington Criminal Sittings, FALSE PRETENCES. Frank 1). Lowe, alias C. tf. Campbell, was charged with obtaining, by means of a valueless cheque, the sum of £2 on July 7th from Arthur Lodder, of the City Buffet, Mr Gully prosecuted, and Mr Coates appeared for the accusod, who pleaded not guilty. Assused was subjected to a lengthy cross-examination by Mr Gully as to bin movemonts previous to coming to Wellington and as to why he had sent three trunks of theatrical clothes from Mastcrton before liira. Ho was also questioned very closely as to nlio were the people be was in company with ou the day he left for Sydney. On I his matter he showed a good deal of hesitation, us Ins evidence was at variance with wliat ho had said on tho former occasion.

Mr Gully ; Then yon admit that what you have been staling to the Court about the matter is a lie. Prisoner: Yes.

The prisoner left tho box and after | consulting with him for a short time, Mr Coates intimated that lie wished to withdraw from the caso in consequence of the turn which it had taken and as his instructions were altogether different from tho statement of the accused whilst in tho witness box.

His Honor addressed tho Jury, who retired, and after an absence of twelve minutes returned will! a verdict of guilty. Sentence was deferred until 10 o'clock this morning, Wellington, Saturday, Lowo was brought up for sentence this morning, but Judge Prendorgast remanded him till Thursday,

Alleged perjury, Thomas Tail was charged with having committed deliberate perjury at the Magistrate's Court, Masterton, on August 17th, by stating that he was an unmarried man, which was contrary to fact. MrGodberwas chosen foreman of the jury. The prisoner, who pleaded not guilty, was defeuded by Mr Coates. No witnesses were called for the defence, and the jury without leaving the Court found the accused not guilty.
