Government have rnndo such arrangements with the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company to reduce the culilo rates from Adelaido to New Zealand to five shillitigs for the first ten words and sixpence each additional word; also to reduce tho rates between England and New Zealand to 6d per word. The Company is to bear a quarter of the loss, Now Zealand onethird of the balance, and the o'lior, colonics the remaining two-thirds." Later. In reference to the caWo messago from Adelaide re tho reduction of oablo rates, the Hon. Mr Ward states that the whole matter is premature and heis still negotiating with tlio Australian Governments on the sub* ject. As far as N.Z. ia concerned nothing definite has been agreed to and Mr Ward is somewhat surprised that tli- information contained in the cable has been given publicity to by the South Australian Government. The reduction mentioned in the message is a sweeping one, as the present rate from Adelaide is eleven shillings for tho first ton words, and it is proposed to reduce this to ss, The present rate from Europe ,to New Zealand is 10s2d or 14s3d per word, according to route, and the arrangements made by the South Australian Government with the Cable Co. provide for a reduction to 4s 6d per word.
