COMPENSATION TO PUBLICANS.
Resolutions of Protest (Press Association,) Wanoasuj, July -1. A public temperance meeting was held to-night, when the following resolution, among others, was unanimously carried, and the chairman wa? instructed to forward it to the Premier; —" That this meeting earnestly protests against any attempt to provide out of the funds of local bodies, or out of the proceeds of the license fees, or from any other public fund for compensation to publicans or ground jandlords for any loss sustained by Wtt refusal on the part of the licensing Commissioners to renew their licenses," Ashburion, July 4. The following resolution was passed at the Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist, services in the Ashburton district yesterday ;—" This congregation desires hereby to enter its protest against any attempt being made by Parliament to curtail the power which the people at present exercise in the control of the liquor traffic, and urges the Government to support an extension of the local option vote to existing licenses, aud especially to declare its disapproval of the principle of compensation for loss of licenses when these are refused according to law and in accord with the wishes of the residents." A similar resolution was carried at Mr Knott's meeting in the country district last week. ' . Thames, July 4. A public meeting was held hero tonight under the auspices of the party, and resolutions were carried against the Compensation Bill now before t|ie House, and against the abolition of elective committees on tho Licensing Bench, Brunnerton, Tuesday. At a public meeting last night a resolution was.passed emphatically protesting against the passage of Mr Lawry's Compensation Bill,
