THE PROPOSED FARMERS' CLUB.
[to the editor, wairarapa daily
TIMES,] Sir,—l am a stranger to your district, having recently arrived from Victoria, but I have learned with very great pleasure that a movement is on foot in Masterton 10 inaugurate a Far rner'a Club. These Clubs, or Leaguee, are, I might state, in existence in nearly «very country district in Victoria, and are a ureat boon to settlers generally. Monthly meetings are held, at which papers are read by : j members on subjeciß aileoting farmers and indirectly, and anything of importance to those following agri~ cultural and pastoral pursuits is fully discussed, Tlio result is that the country party is well and faithfully represented in Parliament, suggestions are made to the Legislature on such matters as the Stock Tax, the protective tariff on grain and the like, and the law is invariably modified to meet the views of the settlers. Not only this, but local matters such as the rabbit pest, rust in wheat, and inßeot plagues are discussed in all their bearings, la New Zealand I believe you ha ve even greater pests to cope with than ; we of Victoria, Tben why not combine ? I am fully aware that farmers are very careful in the outlay of their money, and like to see some return for the investment of their pounds,
but the advantages to be derived from . combination are direct and great, and the expenditure of a pound a year in subscriptions is more than justified, Trusting the farmers will fully realise their position and take advantage of the opportunity now afforded for" combining, I remain, etc., Geohqe Goiidon. jQt, Mastorton, 10th June. P.S.—During my brief stay in Masterton I shall be glad to impart what information is in my possession regarding the working of the Farmers' League in Victoria.
