EKETAHUNA SCHOOL.
The monthly meeting of tho Ekctahuna School Ootr-mittee was held on Monday evening, the members present being Messrs T. Baylies (ohairn man), 'M. Neilsoti, F.-D;-Polling, Timmins, and W, A, Eowse,
The minutes of the previous njeet—ing were read and confirmed. The Chairman informed the Committee that the Secretary and himself had accepted a tender for the cleaning for the whole year instead of for tbrse months as agreed upon at the last meeting. The tender was a reasonable one, viz |—School cleaning £U ; removal of night soil £6. They thought it best to accept for the twelve months.
The action of the Chairman was endorsed, The teacher reported six,new pupils had been admitted since the holidays, The school at Newman was opened on January 25th in charge of Mrs Nelson, . Eighteen ohildren were present on the first morning and now there were twentythree on the roll with an average of twenty, Three pupils were; attending there who had not been to the main school, In the main school there were 160 on the roll, with an average of 129. Many of the ohildren absent had been away several weeks, As there was no pause for their absence, he would suggest that the compulsory classes qf the Act be brought into force, Correspondence. from tb.e Education Board, asking the Qommittee if they are satisfied with the Board's arrangement of the Newman school, Deferred till next meeting, , . '■ A considerable disoussion took place over the Newman School, most of the members being adverse to having the control of the school under this committee, Further, disoussion waj deferred till next meeting. In the meantime the Oliairnjaij wi}s empowered to arrange for some responsible person to see that the cleaning is done gratuitously* COJIPUMORY-CUUSE.
