Mr Hogg. M.H.R.
[to the editor.]
Sib, —It is not my intention to enttr into discussion under the above headline, but, seeing the letter of one who writes beneath the nom deplume of "Knight.of Labour," it occurred to me that both the subject matter of the letter and its authorship would be none the worse for a little veutilation. Being a Knight of Labour myself, and knowing somewhat of the history and general workings of the Order, Ido not hesitate to say that I believe the signature to that letter to be a forgery. Although there is an attempt at concealment, there is certainly no ambiguity as to the real intents and purposes of the writer. The intent to ere Ue ill-feeling and distrust among the labouring classes is plain and palpable, but every person who has any knowledge ot the Knights of Labour is well aware that the contemptible tactics adopted by your correspondent are quite suffi* cient to disperse any idea of a Knight of Labour authorship. In the fact that the laboring classes are no longer gullible appears to rest your correspondent's malady. The time for which lahor has been, gulled has oae, extending over centuries. From
the serfdom until now the elevation of labor from gullibility toengullibility has advanced with the opportunities given tor education. The process has been slow but it has been doubly sure. Labour is no lsnger atcripti glebe. It can no longer be bought and sold with the land as so many cattle, nor will it be regarded as such. Labour now asserts itself and demands a just consideration aud participation in all the great political questions of the day.—l am, &c, D. S.Papworth, • Organiser of Knights of Labour. [Mr D. S. Papworth ought to know perfectly well that we do not insert letters to which doubtful signatures are attached. The Knight of Labour who wrote through our columns is a man of good reputation whom Mr D. 8. Papworth might with advantago take as his model.—Ed. W.D.]
