The annual meeting of t'ie Tara-tahi-Carterton Hack Racing Club, heldjyesteiday, was exceedingly successful. Tke weather, although fine and war m, was not too hot, a gen tip breeze blowing steadily all day. The attendance of the public was unusually large, over 1 500 people being present, and that the extra 1£ per cent tax on dividends did not prevent speculation was proved by the fact that no less a sum than £lßl3 passed through the totalisator during the day. The course was in capital order, and some fairly fast time was recorded. The racing throughout was first class, some capital finishes being witnessod, but as rao3t of the favorites won none of the dividends, with the exception of the Hack Maiden Plate won by Mr J. Kent's Atkinson, who paid (£Bl 13s), were very large. The management of the meeting generally was first class in most respects, and reflects credit ou the able Secretary (Mr W, McKenzie) and the other officers. Everyone present seemed to thoroughly enjoy the meoting, the only fault found being with the starting. The details of the various events are as follows: Hack Hurdle Handicap, of 20 so vs. Distance about 1 £ miles. K. McKenzie's b m Depression lOst 111b 1 J. W.Pemberton's b g Kaika 9st 2 6. Benton's b g Mako Mako 9st 3 After Kome delay the field got away in good order, Kaika being the first to show in front, retaining his position until over the lust jump, when entering the straight Depression obtained tli9 lead and won l>y a length, All the horses jumped well, Kaika's manner of negotiating the sticks being very pretty. Catt'a cm Karamu (svrs) 7st 111b ... . . 3 Fifteen horses faced the starter, K. McKenzie's Paiamu, Catt's Kttramu and the Oddfellow being much fancied. However, for some unaccountable reason the field was sent away with Atkinson leading several lengths. Maintaining the advantage he won by a half length, paying the respectable dividend of £3l 15s. Time, lmin 56 sees. Clareville Handicap, of 20 sovs Distance about 1 mile. G. A. Hirscliberg's gg Mahara (svrß) Bst 121b 1 E. Piripi's bm Deception (6yrs) Bst 131b 2 K. Once Again came out with tke others, but before a start could be effected he went off on his own account, and his jockey being quite unable to pull him up, galloped right round the course no less than three times. The horse was finally stopped in front of the stand by some persons getting in front of him. The boy was found to be thoroughly exhausted, but after a few minutes was able to go to the post and attempt a start. In this race Rebellion was made favorite on the machines, both Angler and Revenge being also well supported. Revenge went away with the lead. Rebellion and Angler following in close order. Once in the straight Rebellion came away and looked like winning, but Angler made a forward move, and amidst great excitement beat the favorite by half a length. Time 2min 22 2-sth sec. Dividend £3 10s. Railway Hack Handicap of 15 soys. Distance about £ mile. G. A. Hirschberg's Mahara, Bst 121b 1 G. Benton's Mako Mako, 7st ... 2 K.
