RIFLE CLUB.
A ITw Club For Masterton-
A meeting was held at the Club Hotel on Saturday evening for the purpose of forming a Rifle Club. Several gentlemen were present, Mr Donald Donald being voted to the ehair.
After explaining the working generally of Rifle Clubs, Mr Donald moved that a Rifle Club be formed in Masterton to be called the Masterton Rifle Club. Mr Elkins seconded the motion which was carried unanimously. The following gentlemen gare in their names as intending members:— Messrs D. Donald, R. Kibblewhite, F. Kummer, H.Campbell, VV. Welch, E. Chamberlain, A. Matthews, J. Williams, D. McLauchian, W. Bail stow, D. J. Cameron, G. Judd, R Campbell, J. Hessey, E. Hare, C. Anketell, H. Welch, F. Harrison, W. H. Beetham, R. Cameron, A. A. Elkins, C. Wilton, G. Bentley, and D. McKenzie.
Rules were submittedby the chairman and read for approval. The Chairman said that Mr Hugh Williams had kindly given permis..' sion to erect targets at iMnsdowne. He thought canvas targets were the best, as they were less trouble than iron targets. Four targets would be required. He had written to the Government in reference to the cost of iron targets, but no reply bad yet arrived. He should propose buying rifles and erecting targets and a small sited. This would mean a first cost of £24.
Mr Hessey moved that the elrction of officers be proceeded with. Mr D. J. Cameron seconded.
Mr Duncan McLachlan moved as an amendment, that the election be postponed until Saturday next. Mr Elkins seconded the amendment on the ground that it would be wise to get a larger meeting. With all due respect to those present th«y might get more able men to come forward. Another thing, if they appointed officers from those present it might cause feeling outside. Messrs Hessey and R. Campbell thought that they might elect officers from the names handed in, whether they were present or not. Messrs Elkins and Mr McLachlan with/ipew tbp ancj the election was proceede.d with. Mr J. It was decided to leiye the question of procuring rifles and ammunition with Mr Donald.
The subscription for the first year was fixed at £l.
Mr D. Donald thanked the members present for the honor done him by electing him Captain of the Club. His oflfy object was to encourage rifle shooting in Masterton and he felt sure there would be no difjicujjy in getting a good team together to take part in the next meeting of the N/Z. Association at the Hutt. The meeting then closed 'with the customary vote of thanks to the choir.
