NORTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa North County Council t was held yesterday (Thursday), there e being present Crs Beetham (chair- t man), Maunsell, Stuckey, Groves, . Smith, Cockburu-Hood, Yon Redin, and Guild. . The minutes of the previous meet- { ing having been read and confirmed, outward correspondence was read. , CORRESPONDENCE. —(iNWARDs). ( From Jens Anderson, asking for j the appointment of poundkeeper for the Mauriceville district.—Referred to the Mauriceville Road Board. From P. Garr, applying for an extension of time for the completion of his contraot on the Eketahuna - Tiraumea road.—Cr Smith moved that the matter be left in the hands of the Engineer, to have the work done as soon as possible.—Gr Yon Redin did not think it was -within the | province of the Engineer to give an ( extension of time. It would perhaps ] be as well to suspend operations, as ( the roads would be cut up by the , winter traffic.—After some discussion ( it was decided that an extension be , granted till December Ist. , From F. E. Titham, drawing at- , tention to the uecesßi'ty for constructing a bridge on the Homewood road. \ —The Engineer was instructed to ( report upon the site for a bridge to ( next meeting. From Ralph Manning, stating that : five horses were being run in Neill's ', coach on the Tenui road for the conveyance of goods instead of , passengers.—t>'r Groves stated that , he had interviewed Mr Neill and found that he had never carried more than four hundredweight of goods, j He was using the fifth horse on , account of the 'leavy roads.—On the motion of Cr Yon Redin, seconded by Cr Cockburn-Hood, the matter was left in the hands of the members for the Castlepoint Riding. From a number of residents in the Wellington Special Settlement No. 2 block, asking that the request for a new road district to be known as the Makakahi Road District, be reconsidered. They contended that their grievance was a real and not an imaginary one. They were convinced that under the supervision of Mr King the district would not receive justice. The area of the proposed road district was 15,360 acres, and that occupied 6,000 acres.—Mr Faulkner, one of the petitioners, who was present, stated that he understood the cost of the election would be defrayed by the members.—Gr Yon Redin said a petition was now ia circulation in the Eketahuna district, praying that the road district of that part be divided into three wards, with eight members. If this was carried, the Wellington Special Settlement No. 2 would have two members. It would then be unnecessary to have a new Board.—Mr Faulkner: This has been tried already, and has failed.—Gr Yon Redin: I don't think so. The petition is now being taken round by Mr Murdoch.—Cr Smith thought the division of the road district into , wards would be better than forming a new Board.—Gr Cockburn-Hood sympathised with the settlers m the outlying districts. If the settlors were not receiving justice they should have redress at the hands of the Council. There was very little ex--1 pense attached to a small district.— I The Chairman promised Mr Faulkner i that the matter would receive cou- - sideration. From Mr Gray, Secretary of the 1 Mauriceville School Committee, re--1 questing that the Council place no ' obstacles in the way of the Committee acquiring a gravel reserve for [ a school site.—Mr F. Kummer wrote * with regard to the same question, and the Commissioner of Crown Lands ' asked if the Council had any objection to the reserve being devoted to school ' purposes.- Referred to the Engineer. 1 From M. P. Jensen, applying for the position of road surfaceman on the Eketahuna-Tenui road.—llei ferred to the Engineer. From settlers in the Eketahuna '• Riding, requesting that a loan of 1 £IOO be raised for the widening of 1 the road at the entrance to the | Eketahuna railway station.—The 1 clerk was instructed to take the i necessary steps to raise the loan. , From Grown Lands Department, - with reference to the opening up of ■ Crown Lands in North Wairarapa.— 1 A Committee consisting of the Chair- \ man and Crs Yon Redin and Smith ', was appointed to arrange a schedule of roads required through Crown , Lands and forward to the Governt ment. From Thomas Puce, sawmiller, i Mangamahoe, stating that he did not 1 see why he ahould be called upon to 1 contribute a special amount towards ' the maintenance of the Mangamahoe rotd. From Ashburton County Council i requesting the support of this Council to a resolution for the amendment of section 211 in the Counties Act which refers to the overdrafts. The matter 1 together with the proposed amend"' | ment of the Counties Act, was re r ferred to a committee consisting of , the Chairman, and Cre Stuckey, Yon Reden and Maunsell. 1 From Mr Nelisen, requesting that 1 the bush on the side of the Forty- | Mile Bush road north of Eketahuna be felled. It was resolved that the • Council has no funds for such a work, i From Masterton Borough Council ' offering a quantity of birch planking ' for sale. Left in the haods of the I Engineer, KVADINQTOLL. A plan was submitted by the Clerk, showing how Mr Taplin, carrier, ; of the Taueru, was evading the pay--1 ment of tolls. Cr Groves said it was certainly > most unfair that Mr Taplin should be allowed to evade payment. After some discussion it was re* solved that the collector of tolls be ■ instructed to report on the evasion, and the Clerk be authorised to take proceedings. It was also resolved to inform Mr Taplin that the Counoil intends to take proceedings.
