HOUSE of KEPREBENTATIVES. TUESDAY, July 21. The new member forTe Aroba, Mr Fraser, took his seat. The Wellington Chew's Lane Encroachment Bill was read a third time and passed. Mr Joyce presented a large nnm6er jf petitions from all parts of the Colony praying for the passing of the Licensing Prohibition Bill. Mr Guinness and Mr Taipua were granted a week's leave of absence, and a further fortnight's leave was granted to Mr Macarthur, on account of illness. The Public Petitions Committee recommended a pension to Mr Francis Stevens, of Wellington. The Defence Minister informed Mr Palmer that the total yearly salary paid to Lieut.-Colonel Hume under ill the various appointments he held was £7OO, which was LIOO a year lesa than he had received before taking :harge of the police and defence. The Colonial Treasurer, in reply to Mr Fisher, said Mr Wilson had performed as much a? possible of the tolicitor's work in the Public Trust Office. The Jtotal amount spent in lolicitor's expenses since January 1, IBTSj was 18,000, and he would that day lay a return on the table showing how that money had been spent. The Minister for Education informed Mr Buckland that it would not, be practicable to have swimming taught in pablic schools. The Auctioneers Bill was read a second time. It was decided that a sum be placed on the estimates to pay off the bank overdraft on account of Bellamy's. The motion for the second reading of the Land Bill, was the signal for a lengthy discussion, which continued until 1.35 a.m., at wliich hour the House adjourned.
