BOROUGH COUNCIL.
| The fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Oouncil was held in the Institute Chambers lust evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor and Ors Heron, Hessey, Dixon, Mutrie, Gapper, Feist, IS. and T. Chamberlain and Perry, The minutes of tbe previous ord:nary and special meetings were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From J. Bannister, stating that his lease of a portion of the Maori reserve had reverted to its original ownerß. Received. From Messrs A. W. Hogg and W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R.'s, stating that they would do their best in the interests of the Borough when the Fire Brigade Bill comes before the House. —Received.
From J. ,T. Freeth, requesting a bonus of £lO for past services asjr Returning Officer for the Borough Licensing District, and asking for a salary of £8 a year in the future.— Cr Feist moved that the requeßt bo granted.—Cr T. Chamberlain seconded.—Cr Gapper moved as an amendment tbac the sum of £5 5a be voted Mr Fraeth for his past servioes, and £2 2s a year in future.—Cr Dixon seconded.--Cr Heron did not think it a legal expenditure.—The Mayor thought it would be dangerous to give a bonus for past servioes.—Or Gapper withdrew that portion amendment with regard to —After some discussion ' ment was put and carried on division. From County Engineer, stating that the Council had noose tor the surplus planks from the Waipona bridge.—Referred tc the Works Committee. From the Christchurch Gas Company, stating that they had no wet meters in Btock.—Received. From the Wellington Gas Company, offering meters for sale.—Re* ferred to the Gas Committee. From the Wairarapa North County Council, stating that tbe sum of £25 had been granted towards the erection . of a morgue.—The calling for tenders and completion of the work was left with the Morgue Committee. From same, stating that the question of a water supply from the Waingawa would be considered at a future meeting. From the Railway Commissioners, offering to exohange coal for coke.— Referred to the Gas Committee, with power to act. From the Wairarapa Charitable. Aid Board, requesting the usual subscription.—The amount was passed for payment. From ratepayers in George requesting that the street be proclaimed a public street.—The matter was allowed to stand oyer. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. The Inspector of Nuisanoes reported as follows: There are a number of nuisanoes within the Borough calling for speedy abatement. Several closets are in a disgraceful state and require immediate attention. There is a stagnant water" hole on the premises of Mr Hookley in Queen street. I find that the closet at the Wairarapa Star office does not. receive proper attention, and the back yard generally is not satisfactory. The premises of Mr Butler in Queen street are not satisfactory. Notice has been given to several persons to clean their back yards- Many persons often forget to have their closets cleaned or emptied when shifting from one house to another. This should not be. Some of the receptacles for night soil hold sixteen gallons, whilst the fix the size at five gallons. Steps should be taken to prevent the ac» cumulation of such terrible filth. Or Feist: Has not the Inspector of Nuisances power to act without reporting to the Council ? The Mayor: I have thought so all along. I will move that the Inspeotor be requested to exercise the fullest powers he has. LICENSING. The Mayor Btated that as some objection might be taken to the apt pointment of a Returning and Presiding Officer at aspecial meeting, lis would move that the appointments made at the special meeting be con.> srmed. Cr Feist seoonded.—Carried. GENERAL RATE. The Mayor gave formal notice to move at next meeting that a general rate of Is in the £, and a Library rata if Id in the £ be struck 'within the Borough,
ARREARS. The Mayor stated that (he Auditor had drawn his attention to the arrears of rates in the Borough. He would move that all arrears be sued for with" out further notice. Or Dixon seconded.—Carried. RENALIi-STREET. Cr T. Chamberlain asked if Benall. street had been taken over bv the Council. 1 Or Heron said that practically ft had. Or Chamberlain: I world like to suggest that a post be put in at the top oorner.
Or Heron: I have already in* structed the Overseer in this matter* Cr Chamberlain also suggested the putting up of a notice,warning persons against riding on the footpath. The suggestion was adopted. THE WATER SUPPLY.. Or Dixon : 1 should like to know if any reply has been received-' from Mr Caselberg with regard to his water supply. Cr Heron-: I think the agreement between Mr Caselberg and the Council may be considered off. The Mayor suggested that the matter be referred to a Committer After some further disoussion tho matter was referred to the Work® Committee with power to aot. A Tho meeting then adjourned. J
