TENUI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Poisoning is going on slowly as the , weather permits. A good many sheep have been lost on different runs , in this district through eating the poisoned grain. This is hard luck, and coupled with a possible change in the incidence of taxation, makes us anything but good tempered. A pleasant little dance was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening last in connection with the Cricket Club. Abouttwenty-fjve couples were present. Most excellent music was provided by Mesdames Hancock, McDowell, and Stewart, Misses Owen and Speedy, Messrs Southey and Lawson. Mr A H Bead was the prime mover, and did wonders. There is an old saying "You can work a willing horse to death," but Mr Bead seems hard to kill. In addition to the duties of M C, which were ably carried out, he was waiter, stoksr, Secretary, -and Committee, all rolled into one. However, the dance was most enjoyable, and the refreshments all that could be desired, and it must have been 4 a.m. when we parted. Tha shooting match between the Masterton Rifle Club has, I hear, been pobtponed till the spring on account of the bad state of the roads. This is quite right and proper, "shooting is out and football is in" as we used to say at school, and the roads are very bad indeed now. Eoth coaches were over an hour late last Friday, and the horses appeared very much distressed. This winter is reckoned to be the most severe we have had for many years, but I notice it is pretty general all round, and the thermometers all over the country are trying hard to beat the record. We live in hopes of getting below zero ere long. Our footballers returned safely on Sunday evening. From all accounts they played an excellent game on the Park Oval, and although short of their best men were all but victorious. Better luck next time bovs!
