ROAD BOARD
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Taratahi -Carterton Road Board was held on Saturday. Present— Messrs H. R. Bunny (chairman), E. W. Dorset, H. Braithwaite, W. B. Allen, A. Gallon, G. W. Deller, and F. Uvay. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported the Bank overdraft to be £602 2s 2d. He also laid upon the table a statement of receipts since last meeting.
The sureties for Mr Jame3 cneff as rate collector were submitted to the Board and approved. The following correspondence was received:—From Messrs A. Moody and W. Cadwallader re removing a gate from the Waihakeke road.—Having heard the explanation from the Warden it was resolved that the petitioners be informed that as soon as the Board i 3 in a position to fulfil their arrangements with Messrs
Braithwaite and A cocks tho gate will be removed. From Mr W. Hercock re Portland Road.—The Overseer informed the Board that Messrs Potts and Co. had laid a lot of slabs and sawdust on the road, and that it would cost some considerable amount to remove them to make the road fit for metalling.— It was resolved that the matter be left with the Wardens for No.'s 3 and 4 Wards, and that Messrs Potts and Co. be requested to remove the obstruction. Mr Gallon moved, and Mr Allen seconded, that the special rate levied over a portion of No. 5 Ward be collected.—Messrs Anderson and Welch also waited on the Board and urged that the rate should be collected, as the money borrowed was spent in making the road for that part of the Ward. The Chairman, in putting the vote to the meeting, regretted very much that the ratepayers for the whole of the Ward were not in favor of levying a separate rate so that the levying of' the special rate might be obviated. After some further discussion Mr Deller moved an amendment, and Mr Dorset seconded, that the discussion be adjourned for a fuller attendance of Wardens, and that the Wardens be specially requested to attend at the next meeting. The amendment was carried.
The Chairman reported on the matter in respect to the proposed bridge over the Ruamahunga River at Kokatau, and moved that a special meeting of the-Board be held to arrange the matter.in respect to the rate.—lt was finally decided that the Chairman and Messrs Grace and Dorset form a committee to arrange the matter. Sundry accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting closed.
