Senior Cup Matches

[By Diogenes]

The first match in the second round for the Senior Cup of the Wairaiapa Rugby Union waR played on the Maßterton Park Oval on Saturday last between the Red Star and Masfcerton clubs, resulting in a win for the latter by fifteen points to love. The match was one-sided throughout, and a very poor display of the game was made. Probably this may be accounted for in a measure by the slippery nature of the ground. The attendance of spectators was as usual very large, and the greatest interest was manifested in the match. Shortly after three o'clock Iggulden kicked off for the Stars, the play being for some time confined to the centre of the field. By a good rush the Stars carried the leather into their I opponents' fifteens, and looked very like scoring. The situation was, however, relieved by R. Thompson, who marked. The Masterton forwards then got on a good rush, and reversed che position of affairs. The result was that the Stars were almost immediately forced down. The leather was kept in the Star fifteens for some time, when Watson obtained a mark. Thompson took the kick, but failed. From the centre of the field D'Arcy made a long kick. Gray followed up, and Hansen mulling, got possession and falling over the line drew first blood for Masterton. Thompson took the kick, which was an easy one, but failed. No sooner was tho ball again set in motion that D'Arcy kicked into the Star territory, and Hounslow following up got over the line and secured a second try. The kick *as taken by C. Perry, who placed a pretty goal. Play was then taken to tfee centie of the field, where several scrums ensued. Day got on a splendid dribble, ind the Stars were again forced down. Soon afterwards J. Perry got possession from a loose scrum, and by a dodgy run got over the line. The kick was taken by Thompson, but was again a failure. The Stars then rallied, and after some fine rushes, succeeded in forcing their opponents. The Masterton forwards here exercised themselves, and took the play into Star territory. The Star backs mulled, and J. Perry ran in between tne posts. 0. Perry took the kick but failed to convert. No sooner had play again commenced than he Masterton forwards made another

rush. Hounslow negociated a fine run, and passed to J. Perry, who succeeded in getting over the line

again. Thompson kicked, and placed auother goal. With the score, Masterton nine points, Stars nil, half time was called, the play being in the centre of the field.

In the second half Masterton had it all their own way, the Stars acting oh the defence. The game was exceedingly slow, and hardly any play worth noticing occurred. From a mark by Watson in front of the Star goal, C. Perry placed three more points to the credit of his team. H. Perry got over the line, but as the try was disputed a force down was given. The Stars obtained one or two penalty kicks in the Masterton territory, but no score resulted. The Masterton forwards made another rußh, and J. Perry, who was always on the. spot, agiin crossed the line. The kick, which was taken by Thompsor, was a failure. Watson after* wards got over the line near touch, but the try was disputed. Whilst the umpires were arguing, C, Perry took the kick, which was a difficult one, and placed a pretty goal. The try was eventually allowed, but as the goal had been kicked before the decision had been given, the extra two points were not taken. Whatman soon afterwards obtained a mark and kicked out to Wallace, who made a fine run, and being collared passed to Thompson. The latter made the run of the day, and passing all the opposing backs, got in near touch. C. Perry took the kick, but could not increase the score. Although the Stars wore undoubtedly beaten, they played pluckily towards the end of the game, and several times looked like scoring. The Masterton team was forced down, and immediately afterwards "no side" was called. The game Ujua endad, Masterton, fifteen points (three goals and six tries), Slars nil. A most frendly spirit was displayed throughout the match. A decided feature of the game was the passing of the Masterton team, who showed a great improvement in this direction. The most conspicuous players for the winners were Watson, Gray, Day, Hounslow, and J. Perry, and for their opponents Hudson, Wilson, Hoar, and Hawke. Messrs W. McKenzie and Butement acted as umpires for the respective teams, Mr Cornwall officiating as referee,

The match betw2on the Greytown and Te Ore Ore Clubs, played on tho Worksop road ground resulted in a win for the former, after a hard "fight by a goal and try to thi"ee tri9S. The Greytown team was very weak, only nine of the first fifteen playing. The Natives phyed pluckily throughout and had all the best of it. It was by sheer "hard luck" they did not win.

Masterton may now be said to have won the Cup. They have played four matches, and have won them all.

The Mastertoti Club'will sustain a heavy loss in the departure of "Bob" Thompson, who leaves on Thursday for Sydney. I am suro his many friends in this district will wish him success on the other side,

The match that was to have been played between Carterton and Grey, town second teams, went by default to Carterton, Greytown not being able to muster a team.

At Wellington on Saturday the Ponekes defeated the Melrose by nine poiqts to three.

A Wellington representative team beat Canterbury on Saturday in an Association match by a gaol to nil.
