MUSICAL FESTIVAL.

When first the musical festival was projected, great doubts were expressed as to the possibility of providing a two nights' concert with amaieur talent, sufficiently attractive to secure audiences large enough to fulfill the purpose for which the festival had been got up. A look at the programme will, however, convince everybody to the contrary, and it is Bale to predict the biggest houses that have ever assembled to any performance in Masterton. The management decided from the start that none but the best local talent Bhould be asked, in addition to Greytown and Wellington talent. The services of von Keisenberg been "the' biggest ohorus that has ever been got together here, with an orchestra containing, ttgw insrumentalist af ability, will their bow to a Masterton audiencTon Tuesday night. The programme has been carefully arranged, so that while only containing the best of music it embraces such a variety as to suit different tastes. To show how successfuly has this end been attained a look at the programme is convincing. The great choruses " The Heavenß are Telling" (Haydns' Oreation) and tho " Halleluiah Ohorus" out of Handel's "Messiah," with their wonderful contrap unotual settings, varied by the gay and simple Pinsutti's "Moonlight and Musio," the serious and sentimental "Parting . and Meeting" by Mendelssohn, followed by that sparkling ohorus, "The Stars above us" out of'Weber'B gipsy opera "Preoibso," will form in themselves a thoroughly enjoyable musical entertainment The orchestra, besides supplying the accompaniments to the most important vocal pieces, will perform _ two great overtures each night, all of ' them being new to Masterton. audiences. The management of the festival, knowing fall well that new , and outside talent would be greatly the means of attracting larger audiences, have been lucky to secure as soloists for the first night Greytown's leading vocalists, Messrs Black, Hunn, and Flux, while on the,/ second night those two mnfrrfljfi P{«rcpm J fflffl'"Mr E. J. SMlfTfTWellington, will contribute no less than five items between them. Yan Bree's brilliant cantata "St. Cecelia's Day" forms a Bplendid second part of the programme. The hall and stage will be elaborately decorated, and the seating accommodation so perfected as to ensure the convenience and comfort of the audiences, and nothing will be left undone to produce the most pleasant of musical performances. ,
