Ratrenohment Proposals.

Further Drtaili. (Prom the Times.) As a result of the late Cabinet meetings the Ministers have definitely decided upon carrying into effect, still' further retrenchments in connection with the Lands, Survey, Stock, and Native Lands Departments. The changes proposed are more or less as follows:—In the Stock Department £2OOO per annum is to be saved by the r«« tirement of 10 inspectors and one clerk. The several distriots are to be enlarged and supervised by the inspectors remaining in the service. The Lands and Survey Depart-* ments are to be amalgamated, and Mr H. J. H. Eliott, who is ac present Under Secretary for "'the Lands and Mines, is to be placed at the head of the Mines Department alone, as its Undersecretary. In the Lands and Survey Depart* ments thirty-three officers are being' dispensed with, and twelve, including five chief commissioners of Grown Lands, are to be transferred to new distriots, to be deoided upon later on. The Commissioners referred to are Messrs Marohant (Wellington), Humphries (Auckland), Baker (OhristchHrfih^»^[uellgL .(Wesfcland), ~ and Spence (Ihve'rcargill). By „ these changes the total saving in the two departments is estimated at £6500 per annum:. The total savings in -salary by the changes we haye mentioned amounts > to £9OOO per annum, and the sum required for cdmpensation to officers is about £4OOO. With reference to the Native Lauds Department the Cabinet decided yesterday to retrench five of the present Judges, the proposed sohenie being to divide the North Island into circuits, each of whisb will be under the charge of one of the judges remaining in the seryioe. [Bv Tkleobaph.] Wellington, Saturday. The five Native Land Court judges to be retired are Messrs W G Mair, J N Wilson, E W Puckey.R Trimble, . nd J S Clendon. Extensive reforms in the administration of the Native Land Courts are contemplated. Though the exact nature is not yet decided on, the „ proposals, it is understood, go in the direction of assigning; each judge a district within whioh he shall travel on circuit. It is also intended to shift the Land Conrts of some of the superfluous paraphernalia which is associated with them. The presiding officials, instead of being called judges and so appearing' on the face of it to have co-ordinate rank with members of the Supreme CJMfo, Bench, will have some other dia|K#r title, probably that of Recorder. Toe expenß9s in connection with the employment of clerks and interpreters has also been cut down considerably. There are still thirty sheep inspectors lefc for the Colony.
