Victorian railways.

A poster which has beou issued by the Railway Commissioners in Victoria bidding porters display a little civility seems to have missed its mark. Here, says " Atticus " in the Leader, is a narrative given exactly as a lady of my acquaintance gave it to me. She had returned from the Wimmera to Melbourne. On Saturday last she proceeded by train to a suburban station, and there engaged a cab. Her box, a fairly heavy one, was at tho top of the steep and awkward steps, thecab i f . seems, superfluous to say, was at the bottom. Her sole companion was a little boy. She asked Jehu to bring her box down. He declined. It was, he said, the duty of the porter. She asked the porter; he declined, as* sorting that it was the cabman's business. Then ensued a controversy between the cabby in the street and porter on the platform, a controversy carried on in stentorian tones. "Bring down that box," roared cabby. "Dome and get ityourself," shouted the porter, "you're [.aid for the job, 1 ' "I can't leave my horse," retorted cabby, and the Government pays you to caery luggage," The disputants were growing warm, the onlookers were becoming interested, so the luokless lady exclaiming, " please don't make a scene," took one end of the box, the little lad the other, and the two struggled down, the cabman and porter complacently watching them. I suppose it's all right, for have not the railway officials assured the commissioners that they do well to despise the criticisms of a corrupt Press."
