William Teare, for being drunk in a public place, was sentenced by Mr. M. Oaselberg, J.P., this morning, to twenty-four hours imprisonment without the option of a fine. The Grand Nevada Lodge has duly recognised the Grand Lodge of New Zealand as of full masonic authority within this country.
Mr R. S, Hawkins has commenced business as a barrister and solicitor at Brandon Street, Wellington.
Mr. H. M. Stanley proposes uiakin? an extended lecturin? tour of Australia, and sails for the colonies in October next.
The Bootmakers' Operatives Union of Auckland have been moving ia the direction of securing increased wages, and have submitted to the Masters' Association a schedule of the prices paid in the South. These are higher than the rates ruling in Auckland. The following is a statement of assets and liabilities in the estate of David Anderson, laborer, of the Taueru: — Assets—Acre of Wardell township £SO, spring trap £5, total £55. An overflow of water was caused at the Post Office corner yesterday which nearly submerged the office of our local contemporary. The cause of the deluge was the obstruction of the progress of the stream by a copy of the Woirarapa Star. Although there are about a dozen Justices in Masterton, not one could be found at ton o'clock this morning to hear a common case of assault. The result wa<) a considerable inoonvonience to Court officials, witnesses and reporters. The proposal of the Masterton Football Club to establish a gymnasium in this town should meet with the hearty cooperation of all sections of the community. Such a means of deriving an healthy exercise has been a long-felt want in Masterton,
The enterprising people of the capital of New Zealand, says the Colonies and India, have been making a bold attempt lately to have Wellington substituted for Sydney as the headquarters of the A ustrahan squadron. The local papers have lately expatiated with much eDthusiaatio vigour upon the spacious accommodation in the harbour, with its fine sheet of calm, land-locked water, and so forth, but it was exceedingly unfortunate the other day, when a large number of visitors went aboard one of the men-of-war in the harbour and were compelled to remain on board all night because the wind freshened up a little.
An assault of a serious nature occurred in Masterton on Saturday evening. It appears that Mrs Betty (wite of the Borough Overseer) and her child were proceeding along Smith street, when 'they were approached by man from behind who appeared to be intoxicated. The child exclaimed "Oh, mother, here's a drunken man," and as she did so the man rushed up and struck Mrs Betty violently over the head, almost knocking her to the ground, As the child commenced screaming the perpetrator of the outrage at once decamped. The matter was reported to the police, and a man named William Teare was afterwaidß arrested on suspicion. He was brought before Mr M. Casolbcrg, J.P , this morning, and denied all knowledge of the affair. The case was remanded till ten o'clock to-morrow morning on the application of the police.
