ENGLISH. London, January 26. In the House of Commons, Mr Matthews, Home Secretary, in answer to a question, stated that ho was quite satisfied with the manner in which the inquest on the Duke of Bedford had been conducted. January 27. Mr F. H. Jeune, QC„ has been appointed Judge of the Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty Court, vice Sir James Hannen, appointed to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. In the House of Commons, Sir James Fergusson stated that it was unlikely that th<* convention .to be submitted to the Portuguese Cortes respecting the Zambesi and Shire Siver districts would be favorably considered, as the one previously submitted was not ratified. The statement that the Mozambique Company had bean granted a charter for the purpose of exploiting Portuguese East Africa is unfounded. It is reported than theTahitians are eager for American protection over the Group. At a meeting in Edinburgh it was determined to supply funds freely in support of the strikers. A quantity of goods and minerals lying uncovered at Calderbank station was set on fire by the ignition of a stock of paraffin. Mr Matthews, the Home Secretary, promised a deputation of shipowners to provide police protection in order to prevent disturbances, and drafts of constables will be detailed immediately for duty. The practice of co-operation among dockers is growing. It is found that the wages are higher, and the work is got through more quickly.
FOREIGN. New York, January 26. A blizzard is raging on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. New York and Boston are isolated, all the wires having been wrecked. Damage has been done to the extent of a million dollars.
