The Times say's he'has a tremendous voice fend'a determined manner : he stands steady with his hands behind his back, he gives out his wellformed, rather rough sentences—they suit his voice—with great decision; a quiet smde on his face, his eyes twinkling every time he makes a point, now and then a hand comes to the front, and there is a gesture or two. Mr. Cadnian was sworn in this morning as member of the Government, with the portfolio of Native Minister. He will probably take charge of the Charitable Aid and hospitals. A return laid on the table ol tho House yesterday showed that the total number of votes recorded at the reoent general election was 150,025, the total number of electors being 183,171. the total population at last census was 573,657. Professor Anderson's new Vaudeville Transatlantic Troupe, the most wonderful in the world, which has been billed to appear in the Theatre Royal this eveniug with the most sensational performance ever produced, has not yet arrived, and it is reasonably supposed that, havinet Profited by the reception of others in Masterton, the management has pitched its tent elsewhere. A young lad over at Pioton was caught stealing apples not many nights since. The owner thought the best punishment was to make him apologise in Lho newspaper. He did it in this fashion :—I, a resident of Picton, having been caught in the act of pilfering apricots from Mr Swanwick's-garden, at 11 o'clock on Saturday evening, do hereby express my gratitude at being let off further punishment by paying cost of this advertisement. A shocking murder was committed at Prahran on the Kith, when an enginedriver named William PJiolan cut the thioat of his paramour, Ada Hatton, and then attempted to despatch himself in an insane manner. The cause was jealousy. Phelan is likely to recover. At the hospital he expressed resret that the knife was not keener, as he would now have been dead himself instead of having to be hanged. Tho usual weekly meeting of Phcunix Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was held in the Temperance Hall on Wednesday evening, 28th inst., Bro. W. H. Frethey, 0.T., presiding. There was a large attendance of members. Fivo sisters and threo brothers wero added to tho roll of members, making a total of twenty initiated during the quarter just ended.
