[United Press Associaton.] Accidents and Fatalities. Auckland, January 2G. At the inquost on the body of McCarthy, tailor, of .Newmarket, who stabbed himself with his shears, a verdict of temporary insanity was returned. Hokitika, January 20. Two men named Hammond nn<l Smith were imprisoned in a tunnel driven for the Mont D'Or Company's head-race. A large slip came down the face of tho terrace and covered up the mouth of the tunnel at 7 o'clock on Friday night. An alarm was at once given by the men working in the vicinity, and a number of miners assembled and drove through tho slip for nine hours, They were afterwards got out, but had confined in a
narrow passage, aud standing in 2ft of slush. They had put out their light to economise the air. Blenheim, January 26. Thomas Davis, an old resident of Blenheim, fell dead in an orchard on Saturday afternoon whilo picking fruit. The cause of death was heart disease.
