Sir G. Grey is the only ono of the old Australian explorers alive. Eighty-three women at Balclutha have declared in favor of tho female franchise. The Wanganui Herald states that one mnholtler up the coast has guaranteed Messrs Nelson Broß. 8000 sheep a year tor five years. Mr W.J. Walters, of Ghristchurch, has been appointed manager of the fellmongery branoh of the Longburn freezing works. The Champion bolt for 1801-92 in connection with the New Zealand Bide Association has been won by Volunteer Kruse, of Wanganui. It i 3 stated that Sir George Grey speaks fluently French. English, Dutch, German, Flemish, Kaffir, [in various dialects,] Maori, and Australian spoken in the Northern and Western territories. The fiouso of Representatives resumes its sittings this afternoon, hut it is expected that an immediate adjournment will be made till April. It is stated that Mr W. W. McCardle will he a candidate for a vacant seat in the Wellington Education Board. It was rathor amusing to notice that the work of kerbing a footpath in the Borough wai being supervised this morning by three members of the Works Committee and the Town Clerk. The Rev. Edward Walker, of tho New Zealand Alliance, who has recently done a tour of the West Coast, will shortly pay a visit to Masterton and the various towns in the Wairarapa. W. H. S. Roberts, of Oamaru. told his creditors the other day that when he came to Omaru his estate was worth £23,000, and his rents, etc, e mailed £1.200 a year, but all had noir gone, the principal part since 1884. It is satisfactory to find that still another Masterton youth has made a successful start in Australia,. Mr Samuel Pearson, who left here some few weeks since, has, we learn, found employment in a wholesale warehouse in Sydney. A correspondent calling himself a stuedutof nature, and who has a strong antipathy to behisr a victim of a broach <>f promise case, writes to the Wanganui Chronicle upholding the " Festival of Nennere," a yearly solemnisation of betrothals which may at that period be broken or fulfilled We learn from Mr A. Hathaway, the local agent of the South British Insurance Company, that thebuildiugs detached from the premises occupied by Mr Jackson, which were destroyed by tare on Saturday, were insured in that company for £SO, and this amount was paid over to-day. At the coroner's inquest on the body of a Victorian woman who was drowned in a well the husband testified : " I saw her when she leaned o/er the curb and tumbled in, and I was going to help her, but just then I saw the cow among the cabbages, and I thought I would drive her out first. Mary orter knowed 'nuff to hang on till I got there."
A contemporary thus graphically describes a Court case recently heard in Masterton:—A little boy harpooned a trout. The ranker happened to be about. The ranger took the fish in keeping; and sent the boy home sadly weeping. But 'ere that trout the ranger swallowed ; the angry parent quickly followed. That ranger jumped and yelled and bounded ; but was'nt he sadly spanked and pounded. And now the parent has been bound to keep the peace for fifty pound. At the meeting of the Wellington Land Board on Saturday a letter was read from Mr T. E. Tathani, suggesting that the Crown Lands recently burnt by bush fires on tha Coast be sown with grass seed or sold at once. Mr J. Drummond, Sheep Inspector, attonded, and stated what had taken place, and strongly recommended the sowing ot the land with grass seed, or the selling of it at once. Ultimately it was resolved that tho Commissioner of Lands should inspeot the land and report at the next meeting.
I Preaching iu Armagh Cathedral the other day, the Eoraan Catholic Primate alluded to the great extent to which gambling prevailed throughout the country. Above all he coudemned bookmaking, and the curse would follow those who persisted in this nefarious business. Tho practice was grossly immoral and productive of evil results, and if some, notwithstanding his dununciation, still engaged in it, he would put them outside the pale of the church altogether,-
