NORTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
The general meeting of the Wairarapa-. North County Council wag held-yesterday at the conclusion of the statutory meeting, when the following inward correspondence was iread.:--
From Commissioner of Crown Lands, n thirds due to the Whareama Road Board, —Received,
From the Mauriceville Road Board recommending the appointment of Soren Eoigard as appointment was confirmed.
From J. 0. Sutherland, requesting that the hill road leading to the Manawa station be repaired.— Referred to the Engineer, • . 'From J. Judd, asking for control of slip-panel at Waingawa bridge approach,—Permission was given Sir Judd to erect a gate.
From United District Charitable Aid Board, enclosing statement of receipts and expenditure for 1889-90, together with estimates for 1890-91. Received. From 0. A. Pownall,-claiming £OOO damages- on behalf of the relatives of the late A. Spaokman, who was killed on tbe Waingawa to Camp, road.—After some disoussion it was decided that the consideration of the matter be held over till next meeting, and that in the meantime a committee visit the locality and report, From J, M, Blade, applying for tho use of the tollhouse at the.end of the North Manriceville road at Is' per' week. From D.Wiley, offering 8s per week for the same building.—Tho offer of Mr Wiley was accepted, From J. S, Holmes, requesting that steps may be taken at once to expend the £3OO loan in making a road through Burling's section 187.-*-The Engineer was instructed as soon as the proclamation is issued to take steps to fence tlie land. From J. S. Handyside, applying for leave of absence.—Application granted. . Moobe v, Meredith.
The Committee appointed to inquire into the question of the claim made by Mr B. B, Meredith for payment of oosts in the aotion Moore, v. Moredtth, reported that they had come to the following conclusions :
1. That the Whareama Road Board did, on tho 28th day of February, 1889, authorise and direct Mr E, R. Meredith to remove certain obstructions whioh had been placed across the. road known as King's line at Eparaima. 2, That in giving suoh instructions the Board were acting in good *faith on the belief that the road was a public road. 8, That Mr RR Meredith carried out these instructions and subsequently, in consequence, became liable for certain law oosts in an action brough't against him by Mr George Moore for trespass, 4. That Mr It R Meredith is entitled in equity to have those costs recouped by tho Board or by the authority now having jurisdiction over tho late Whareama road distriot.
5. That it will be necessary before taking further aotion in the matter to ascortain either by means of a legal opinion or by communicating ■ with the Auditor-General whether the repayment of those costs can be legally made; andin the event of Buoh opinion being not advene to the payment, the Committee recommends the Council to satisfy Mr Meredith's claim. After some, disonssion the report was adopted, and the Clerk instructed to procure a legal opinion on the matter. . General. Or Qrovei gave notice to move that a toll be levied on all stock passing tlu'ough the Taueru toll-gate, PA 1 otherwise that the gate be abolished and a rate levied to pay the interest on the loan whioh was. raised for making the deviation and other work on the Masterton-Waimata road. The Engineer was authorised to send a man to dear slips from the Tiraumea road. The meeting then adjourned,
