BISHOP JULIUS ON ME LABOUR DIFFICULTY.
THE LABOUIt CONFERENCE,
CumsTCHUHCii, Septeuabci* 29,
Bishop Julius preached et the < Catliqclral last night on the Labour | difficulty. He took as Ms text the j words:-" Is it not lawful for me to j do what I.will with, mine own ?"' He | said all were capitalists. Brain arid , muscle was as much capital as money. , Capital had tights iwhich: everybody , asserted, but.it,Wd responsibilities | which Some possessors ; af money c™sidereil it within their , rights to pa/Jlfaerable wages, to form rings, tfapm&rate, to trade on ; the weakness, ignorance, and credulity . of men. Doubtless, however, many - employers would pay better wages if ( they got better prices. Competition prevented them. The public would buy in the cheapest market, regardless \ of the workers who were ground down ; in order that things might be, cheap. Though there had been some violence', , the attitude of .the men in the present commanded his respect. 'Unionism would not accomplish perhaps a per- | manent rise in-wages,but it had done , gre'at good in the past.' The labour party had no right to crush the whole nation for the sake of one class, or to , put pressure on the rights of other ; men, The; present strike in New Zealand had gone too far, and both sides should make peace and nocbe led by either workmen or capitalists in another colony, Was there no spirit of Christ among us to show some way of conciliation? Napier, Tuesday.. The. Free Association of.';Employers'and ' Workmen ot Hawkes Bay have sent the following telegram to tho Government in reply to their invitation to attend the projeoled conference at Wellington:—" We regret wo do not see'our way to send delegates to Wellington, whilo the principle of working with free labor is , denied by Unionists.
