ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

Violent Oontot. /,;:;i -Edward Bourke, who attempted to commit suicida. at Newman, near Eketahaha, yesterday moruing, was brought before Mr B, Boya, J.P., this morning, charged with inflioting wilful injury upon himself. • It appears that Bourke, who had been drinking at Mnsterton and Eketahuna, went out to Wolf s camp near isewinan on Sunday. About six o'olookon Tuesday morning, Mr Wolf was in bed in his tent, when he heard a noise outside* He got up and found Bourke with a -butcher's knife in his handarid blood 'about his neok. He knocked, the knife out of his hand with a stick.-Bourke then
picked up an axe, and threatened,, to kill any person who oam'e near 1 him. All the men in the camp- were out. by this time. They closed lii with Bourke and succeeded, after a
lesperate struggle, in taking the axe [rom him. He was then bound and taken into.Eketahuna,:.
'Constable Bo'aohe,: sworn,' stated that from information received he proceeded about 8 o'clock yesterday morning to Parsons'hotel, where he lound Bourke strapped'down, and covered-with blood. He took off the straps and replaced them with the handcuffs. Then sent for DrMo-. Lennan, who, on his arrival, dressed the wounds, but Btated they were superficial and not dangerous. The manv?ouli],liowever,require watching as he might get bad. again towards night. Brought the acous'ed to Masterton by the atternoon train and placed him in the cells, where he was very violent during the night. - The knife produced was handed him by one of the men living in tlie camp.. Sergeant Price applied for a remand to allow of evidence being produced. - Prisoner was then rpmanded till Wednesday, September Brd, at ten o'olook. ■'-.'-■.-■'
