ARBOR DAY.

• Tho following ciroular has been' addressed to the teachers, guardians, and parents of children attending the public schools of California, by the Superintendent of Public Instruction (Mr Ira 6. Hoitt): — " All will agree that there is no spot on earth that may not be made more beautiful by the help of trees pi flowers. Much has been said and written about the wanton destruction of our-forests, and while our schools cannot proteot the forosts they may and can train up a generation whiob will not leave our mountains, hillsides, and home surroundings treeless. Trees. everywhere exert a controlling influence. This fact we know and feel in our everyday's existence, and every sapling which wo plant in our dooryard, or upon the naked sidewalk in front of our dwellings, makes,. with every spreading branch, expanding leaf, and openingblossom, homa pleasantor and our recollections of "it, and our love for it Btronger. Hur schools bear a olose relation to the family, and we Bhould not be satisfied till our schoolgrounds as well as our homes, are such in themselves and their surroundings as shall he attractive and surely tend to strengthen, enoble, andelevate human charaoter. I therefore earnestly urge the superintendents in each county and the trustees in each district to agree in setting apart one day to be known as the." arbor day," and. unite with the teachers and friends in taking the children out of the schoolrooms and teaching them how to phut trees, vines, and shrubs, aM how to oare for them when planted Let ub teaoh -the children to becoip familiar with trees, to think of their value, and to love them. Thus may they be led by nature's hand to noble thoughts and worthy deeds, I sineerely hope that you will unite in an effort to accomplish the object herein suggested; . Let Arbor day once be inaugurated, and we may succeed in arousing a' sentiment among"®? people whjph will .make possible an effective, remedial legislation in the line of forest laws, such' as jnay be demanded,".:
