AllegoA Perjury by a Ooastablo-
New Pltjiouth, July 16. Constable Gillespie- was committed for tiial at the Stratford Police Court to-day for perjury. The case has excited a great deal of attention, being au unusml thing for the police to be put on trial foi the inaccuracy of tho evidence they give in procuring convictions. Tho case arose, out of tho Supremo Court in New Plymouth, when ho swore that he had a conversation on a certain day at Stiatford with a man named Okoy, Okey produced evidence to show that be was CO miles away on that day, Bail was allowed in two sureties of £SO each. Dundein, July IG. , At a meeting, attended by about GOO persons, under the New Zealand Alliance (most of those present being females) ut resolution wai carried approving the Prohibition Bill now before, the House, strongly urging its adoption, and earnestly desiring all friends of humanity who'desiro to see the Colony froe from the curse of drunkenness to use every legitimate means to induce tho representatives to support tho passing of the Bill. Tho resolution is to ba sent to the Government.
